Destination: Sled Island
With more than 250 bands playing in over 30 venues across Calgary over the course of four nights, Sled Island ’09 looks poised to build on the success it has established in its first two years.
With acts such as Wire, Mogwai, Tegan & Sara and many others gracing Sled Island stages in the past, one has to wonder which bands will stand out from all others this time around. Will it be headliners like The Breeders, Liars and Holy Fuck (no we don’t get our panties in a bunch like everyone else about the the band’s name) or will it be lesser-known local acts like Women and The Ramblin’ Ambassadors that steal the show?

Now let’s be honest, even if you call in sick to work all four days of the festival and crush as many Red Bulls as humanly possible, you still won’t even come close to taking in all that Sled Island has to offer. In light of this, we at The Reflector intend to help your plan your “Island vacation” a little better. That’s why starting Tuesday we will bring you in-depth, frequently updated coverage of all things Sled Island right here on www.thereflector.ca.
From the tiny confines of Tubby Dog to the eight-hour main event at Olympic Plaza on Friday, The Reflector intends to bring you as much hip-hop, punk-rock, folk music, you name it as one person can possibly take. Band profiles, daily photo galleries, video footage and show reviews will all be available throughout the festival. We will also publish a daily guide each morning that will provide some useful information on which venues are sure to be bouncing each night so you don’t venture out into the city’s underground scene totally blind.
