Cougars women’s hockey two wins away from ACAC Gold
Editors Note: It was brought to my attention that there was an error in the story concerning the arena the Cougar’s played at on Friday. It was the Olympic Oval not Centennial Arena. My apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.
The Cougars women’s hockey team is two wins away from completing an impressive upset and taking ACAC Gold from the U of C Dinos.
The team was in last place when they beat out first place SAIT to go into the final with the Dinos.
Head coach Scott Rivett explained the idea of the team completing an upset.
“I think if you look at the standings it looks like an upset but if you actually look at the games I believe 4 of the 5 games were decided by a goal so we felt we were right there with them going into the series and we just needed to compete for a full 60 minutes and see what would happen, “ he said.
“As it turned out we ended up having to compete for a lot more then that with all 3 games going into OT, but it was great to see the girls were rewarded for their efforts.”
The women lost a close game to the Dinos on Mar. 6 losing 4-3. The team bounced back though taking game two 1-0 in three overtimes. “I think we have played fairly well in both games,” said Rivett.
“ Obviously there are a few adjustments we need to make, but we’ve been very proud of our teams effort and determination in the first 2 games.”
He said preparing to play a team creates a different set of challenges every time and that U of C is no different.
“They have a lot of skill and depth throughout there roster with 4 lines who can create opportunities and a blue line that is very mobile and likes to get involved with the attack. Most of the teams have 2 lines that generate most of their scoring, but the Dinos depth is something we had to be prepared for. You can’t just focus on their top line as they have received scoring from everywhere.”
Mount Royal’s Madison Ouellette is leading playoff scoring with two goals and three assists so far.
The men’s hockey team has also made its way to the ACAC gold medal best of five. They’ll be facing the SAIT Trojans starting Mar. 13 at 7 p.m. at the SAIT Arena.
Your story is factually wrong. They played March 13 at the Olympic Oval, not Centennial Arena. That is tomorrow. Plus Calgary won 3-1, 7-0, 2-1, 6-0, and lost one 2-1. That is three games, two blowouts.
