For this year’s event, the ACAD Students’ Association held the wearable art fashion show for two nights at the end of February. With 16 senior art students involved, audiences [...]

Ever since the days of Shakespeare, when men were forced to put on frilly dresses and portray all the female roles, actors have had to deal with the challenges of stepping into characters that are, for all intents and purposes, nothing like themselves. It’s an aspect of acting that is usually a main draw for [...]

For those of you who know me, you know how much I love music and going to gigs is probably my favourite pastime. However, some of you might be in the same boat as me and prefer different genres of music than your friends, often leaving you missing out on gigs because you don’t fancy [...]

You see them everywhere. The frosted tips, orange tans, and $500 Italian jeans (not to mention the ever present abundance of Ed Hardy). These men are commonly referred to as ‘douchebags.’ They’re at your gym, in your salon, possibly even staring back at you in the mirror, and up until now, few have [...]

When Winnipeg’s Perms take to the Liberty Lounge stage on October 2, the stripped-down sound and renewed energy of the veteran rock-poppers will be a treat for us concert lovers.
The band’s catchy tunes and pleasant melodies over distorted power chords are sure to have us tapping our toes and packing that dance floor … and [...]

With the words “wow” and “flutter” in the title of Decidedly Jazz Danceworks’ 2008 show, people can be forgiven if they don’t immediately think of turntables or variations of speed, sound and frequency distortion. Choreographed to 75 minutes of music that is definitely not jazz, choreographer Kimberley Cooper has remounted wowandflutter for a cross-Canada tour.
“I [...]

Sure there were some headaches and logistical nightmares. There were some grumblings about the lineup and how long it took to be released. But, as these photos from Aris Aristorenas show, there was also a lot of fun to be had Saturday on the first day at Alberta Virgin Fest at Canada Olympic Park.

Ryan Guldemond, leader of the Vancouver-based modern-rock group Mother Mother, is becoming an authority on cheap hotels.
“We’re on the road so much, I’m a regular hotel connoisseur,” jokes the Bowie-esque guitarist and frontman.
“There was a really nice one in Ottawa with a big dining room table, nicer than my house, but they’re usually pretty low-brow.”
Which [...]

Easily one of the most interesting groups to attend this year’s Calgary Folk Fest, Umalali — with their group of spirited musicians working tirelessly to promote the endangered Garifuna culture — put on quite an after show Saturday night as part of the festivities. Selina Renfrow shot this video of the group in action.

Four days of music, dancing and likely lots and lots of drinking came to a close with a beautiful mainstage show on Sunday night, featuring the likes of Mavis Staples and Loreena McKennitt, to round out the 2009 Calgary Folk Festival. Aris Aristorenas and Erin Lough took in the final day festivities and filed these [...]
