On Campus: Posters, pricks, and responsible journos

Mar 9th, 2010 | Category: Blogs, On campus

I wish I could begin this article with, “the blogosphere is alight with chatter about…” but that would be an exaggeration. However, there is a fairly busy comment feed on an Edmonton Journal story about a feature published by the University of Alberta’s campus paper, the Gateway, on March 4.
If you want to read the [...]

On Campus: Many free pens at career fair

Mar 4th, 2010 | Category: Blogs, On campus

I know it isn’t just me.
That career fair wasn’t all that I expected it to be. To tell the truth, I didn’t do a lot of in-depth digging because I was manning the Reflector booth (thanks for dropping by, all those who did!) or in class for most of it. But a few passes through [...]

On Campus: Making the most of “reading” week

Feb 12th, 2010 | Category: Blogs, On campus

The halls are pretty quiet here at Mount Royal today. To those of you who are off “reading” in tropical climates, or “reading” while you watch some amazing speed skating in Vancouver, or “reading” while you indulge in a few rounds of Jager-bombs, I totally hope you enjoy yourself. Seriously.
For the rest of us, who [...]

On Campus: Education per hour

Feb 2nd, 2010 | Category: Blogs, On campus

You may have noticed that there’s a fair bit of chatter around Calgary right now concerning the cost of tuition. At the University of Calgary, some professional programs are facing potential increases of up to 47 per cent in some circumstances. Even though the province made a promise to students that tuition wouldn’t rise more [...]

On Campus: Logos, “not how many, but how well…”

Jan 15th, 2010 | Category: Blogs, On campus

Mount Royal is coming of age. The school’s 100th anniversary is this year, and after many years of hard work, we’re finally a university. Now, MRU has to show us what being a university means.
With that responsibility comes the need to create a new logo. Personally, I’m not a fan of the weird M-shaped, flexing [...]

On Campus: When to eat grass

Dec 3rd, 2009 | Category: Blogs, On campus

Pesticides kill people like obesity kills people: overzealous, inappropriate indulgence.

Calgary city council recently shot down the proposed pesticide bylaw that has been under development for many long months. The aldermen who opposed the bylaw said it didn’t go far enough.

On Campus: Tuition time!

Nov 25th, 2009 | Category: Blogs, On campus

Winter semester tuition is due next week. Yes, that soon.

You might now be thinking how thankful you are to come from a family that’s able to pay for your education. Or, you might be glad that you’ve been working 2 part-time jobs for the past couple years to be able to put yourself through university.

On Campus: Put it into neutral for moment

Nov 18th, 2009 | Category: On campus

It’s a beautiful thing to live in a society where our biggest grievance is parking.
Think about it.
Sure, it’s unfair and unfortunate that people who parked facing the wrong way in park & ride lots were issued $50 tickets.
Eventually the tickets were rescinded because the Calgary Parking Authority (CPA) realized they looked greedy and ridiculous.
You’ve probably [...]

On Campus: Breaking down the flag “controversy”

Apr 3rd, 2009 | Category: Blogs, On campus

After national media scrutiny and much vitriol, the Canadian and Albertan flags are now hung proudly in the entrance to Wyckham House.
Dylan Clarkson, a former SAMRC presidential candidate and the impetus behind all the media coverage, had this to say on Facebook:
“Jeff Hall and myself met with Travis McIntosh (President of the SA) and Matt [...]
