It was a busy year for Mount Royal’s sports teams. Here’s a look at what different Cougar teams accomplished in 2008 and where they’re sitting at the start of ’09.
Men’s Hockey
The Cougars sit fourth in the ACAC standings with 11 wins and eight losses. They are four points behind third place NAIT. Forward Josh Zimmer is leading
the team in scoring. The Cochrane, Alta. native has 26 points in 16 games so far.

The men are currently tied for first in the ACAC standings with a record of 9-3.
“We are currently ranked third in the country and looking forward to a quality second half of our season,” said head coach Shawn Sky.
He said the team was 1-3 at one point in the season but “rebounded” to be at 7-3 at the break.
“We still have a lot of work to do before playoffs begin in late February. Our team has proven it is capable of overcoming adversity,
which should help us in the second semester and the playoffs.”
Women’s Volleyball
The women are also tied for top spot in the ACAC South Division. Head Coach Sandra Lamb said with provincials and nationals coming up the team needs to “buckle down and make sure every game is like a playoff game.”
Left side Andrea Price is second
in ACAC individual stats with 110 kills in 37 games.
Men’s Basketball
Tied for first in their division with Red Deer the men’s basketball
team has a record of 10-2.
Head coach Marc Dobell said, “It’s been a good year so far we’ve had a lot of success up till now, had a lot of fun working with these guys, we have a lot of great guys.”
However, Dobell also added that, “we’re not where we want to be right now,” and some improvements
for the team to make in the New Year include taking better care of the ball and being more efficient at the offensive
end.
Brett Kobe is leading scorer with 119 points followed closely by Jordan Hone with 118
Women’s Basketball
The lady ballers are sitting second in their division with a record of 8-4. Six-foot-five forward
Katie Ward is leading the south division in blocks with an average of 2.11 per game.
“It’s been up and down,” said head coach Joe Enevoldson of the season, also added the team is still very successful being eighth in the country.
(We’re) getting to the point where we’re going to start to peak,” he said.
“We need to become the best defensive team in the conference.”
The team took a step in that direction
with a win over the No.1-ranked team from Lethbridge College on Jan. 10.

In 2008 the men’s soccer team played their second season under
