The second wave resurgence of shoegaze over the last few years has unfortunately led the once-underground cult genre to the valley of the buzzwords. The result of this hazy round-two is a plethora of bands heavy on the reverb but with no real merit or distinction.
But Gleemer is not one of those bands.
Anymore, the band’s latest, is a perfect example of the dream-pop-shoegaze-hybrid done right, meshing slight affectations and big dissonance like a toned-down Jesu, hitting you full well in the eardrum before you even have the chance to turn your eyes towards your kicks.
The perfect example of this is on “Cooler Pt 2,” one of the album’s many highs, where energy meets solipsism in a tidal swell of sound.
For anyone still not sick of shoegaze, and even for those who are, this album slays.
