Beating Boredom: Spend a usually lazy Saturday at Calgary’s Market Collective
It’s a Sunday evening and like a multitude of people around the city I’m feeling restless and bored out of my mind. However, after acquiring a platform as the new features editor for The Reflector, I’ve come to decide that I refuse to be bored anymore! More importantly I’d like to aid lovely readers out of this consuming state-of-being as well.
Have you ever felt as though you’ve seen and done everything there is to see and do? You’ve spent your time exploring your neighbourhood. You’ve attempted to travel to bordering towns or cities to get your kicks. You’ve done your sentence on 17th Ave. Yet, after all these years, can you not help but feel somewhat unfulfilled?
Well dear friends, here is where I hope to come in. If you aren’t as hip as some of the folk in the city, and you aren’t always on the cutting edge of what eclectic events are happening around town, then like me, you may have felt a little out of the loop. Fear not however, for I aspire to welcome you with open arms to the hidden gems this city has to offer. Perhaps I am being a little selfish. Perhaps I am doing this in order to get out of the house and have a social life outside of University and work. But heck, why not get the word out about why Calgary is a pretty sweet place to live? And hopefully, I’ll see your eager faces at some of these events or activities that I’ll be suggesting every Sunday via this blog.
So this brings us to a pretty awesome event happening this coming Saturday, October 24. Calgary’s Market Collective will be rolling into Kensington once again in order to bring together local artists, photographers, creators and musicians. Beginning at 10 a.m. and concluding at 5 p.m., the Old Ant Hill Fabric Store on 10th Street, will become home to an independent market. Tables will be set up showcasing the works of various members of the local artistic community where you can purchase unique finds for reasonable prices.
With wares including vintage clothing, accessories, paintings, photographs, stationary, and more, guests are serenaded by the sweet music styles of an assortment of Calgary’s musicians as they peruse the vendors. Upstairs guests will find art installations and interactive displays.
Although some of you may have already heard of this or have partaken in these festivities in previous months, for the good portion of you who haven’t or have sadly missed the event, I strongly suggest heading down next Saturday and soaking in Calgary’s thriving artistic and cultural community. I mean what else could you be doing? Napping or complaining about how bored you are; I’m not the only one that does that, right?
