Rockin’ with Rotaract
Mount Royal’s Rotary club is gearing up for the second annual concert fundraiser on Mar. 6 to benefit youth both locally and internationally.
The branch of the Rotary club, Rotaract, includes members between the ages of 18 and 30 and is currently in its second year of existence on campus. The goal of the club is to bring members of the college community together to help out the community at large through activities such as fundraisers.
“This is our second annual Rotarock concert,” said club president Nikki Farwell. “We host this show in order to raise money for an orphanage in Guatemala and this year we have also decided to give half of the money raised to The Doorway (formerly The Backdoor), which offers an assistance program for street youth in Calgary.”
Farwell has been a member of Rotaract since it was started two years ago and said she joined because she enjoys being able to help others.
“It really feels good when you can do something nice for someone else, and that is why I really enjoy volunteering for a non-profit group,” Farwell explained.
Rotaract is open to all students and the more members the group has, the more they will be able to accomplish, said fellow Rotaract member Casey Luk.

“It really works the mind. With more students, a stronger impact might be effective; perhaps we could extend our reach,” said Luk. In addition to lending a helping hand, Luk said that another benefit of the club is getting to see plans and ideas come to fruition.
“It is very entertaining to see your projects go from some quick scribbles in your notebook or meeting minutes, and actually become realized,” he explained.
One of those projects is Rotarock 09, which will feature four local bands: The Lions, The Matt Blais Connection, Sister’s Keeper and Archilles. Along with some local tunes, there will be a chance to win some door prizes and raffle draws as well, said Luk. The event starts at 7 p.m. and tickets for the concert are being sold for $10 on Mar. 2 and Mar. 4 by Tim Hortons and can also be purchased at the door for $15.
